Music accompanied by the pervasive sound of drums led the curious audience in the room where the Finish label WHITETAIL presented its autumn/winter 2016 collection as part of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. This year the presentation was located at the Stage@me Collectors Room. The label’s designer Margit Peura remained true to herself and relied on clean cuts that radiated a combination of elegance and androgyny.

Whitetail is known for minimalistic and clean cuts. Again Margit Peura, who was born in Estonia, focused on these aspects while designing her new women’s collection. One more time she proved her sense for clear and straight cuts to underline women’s femininity. She didn’t make use of details that distracted from the beautiful designs, except for one accessory worn by every single model. Each of them was adorned by a headgear, which brought to mind the impression of a beautiful, reinterpreted version of a golden cage without thinking of someone being imprisoned. It rather underlined the designs’ elegance. While presenting the collection, its character was supported by different musical directions. First the music was really energetic, before changing to nearly disconcerting sounds, which were comparable to warning signals to catch the audience’s attention. Towards the end, the music spread a feeling of calmness.

In this collection, warm colours were used, such as dark green, dark blue, grey and marsala red. To have a light and conspicuous colour accent she chose coral for some tops and jackets, while dark blue appeared as the colour most often used and combined with all other colour shades. She mainly focused on unicoloured clothing pieces besides two kinds of simple pattern that were added to the designs. The graphic pattern as well as a zebra motif occurred in combination with warm colours, which made the outfits look harmonious and coherent.

The collection’s cuts could be determined as female designs to give a feeling of self-confidence. Both pencil skirts and a-line skirts were shown, which were mini- or knee-length. The tops and cut long pullovers she had designed were loose fitting not to unnecessarily restrict the women in their movements. The cut long jackets varied in the shape of the sleeves. While some had straight cuts, one jacket had trumpet sleeves. By presenting a dress that seemed to have different layers, she demonstrated the fascinating effect of cautious elegance. The designs did not strike the audience’s attention by being opulent but by Margit Peura’s ability to create simple designs, which can be worn in everyday life.
