SEBASTIAN ELLRICH - Tonight We Fly

It’s with a feeling of exclusivity that Sebastian Ellrich welcomed us into his new Autumn/Winter 2016 collection. After a small break to focus on theatre costumes, the designer comes back with influences from his stage background.

He used a Coco Chanel-like presentation to orchestrate his collection. A male model and two women exhibited the garments one outfit after the other, changing in front of us, and inviting us in the backstage of the show. The moves and attitudes rehearsed, the designer clearly wanted to stage the act of getting dressed and to show us how a three-piece suit can become complete with the addition of a hat. To complete this retro private showing, high ceilings, classical music and the smell of cigarettes the male model was smoking were combined to throw us back in years.

In the menswear room, a dimmed light and big pink curtains developed further this idea of a private fitting. It felt as if we were invited into the lives of important buyers, and that we could be part of this world. The model was changing in front of a triptych mirror, and then looking at himself from every angle, giving us an exclusive view of the collection. In the other room, our heads were definitely up in the sky, where the womenswear garments were hung. This night, we flew indeed, we flew back in time, we followed the process of taking up and down the garments and then we flew even more with the last piece that transformed the outfit into a butterfly.
