British designer JASPER CONRAN showed his Autumn/Winter 2016 collection during London Fashion Week at the BFC show space on Brewer Street. He has trained at Parson’s School of Design in New York and has been producing womenswear collections since 1978. Also being one of the founding members of the London Designer Collections – subsequently renamed London Fashion Week – brought him to receive an OBE for his Services to Retail in 2008.
This collection showed once more Conran's quality and precision in material and making. The models had long blunt cut hair, which was topped with a pulled down 90s bucket hat. A modern twist gave of course the different looks that were domineered by the colours of navy, white and different hues of green, while brighter tones set a nice contrast. The designs in their entirety gave off a softly militaristic attitude with patch pockets, epaulettes and bindings. The over coats and jackets had a more masculine approach, while the shirts and dresses had a split front, back and side, to give a more feminine touch. Geometric patterns and prints were bold and graphic, yet stripped back and seemed to be inspired by art and architecture, making them not overloading, but enhancing the looks. Graphic blocks came in a variety of colours, as well as Crayola stripes. The jersey was outlined with bound seams, prints were hand screened on silk and patterns engineered into wool and cashmere, showing Jasper Conran's meticulous attention for detail.
The first look was a navy cashmere double breasted oversized coat with a chunky high neck knit in the same color and fabric. With the bucket hat, the first impression was that the collection would be rather minimalistic with a reference to older times, but the second look with a navy and white wool jersey engineered geometric dress, soon showed that this year's Jasper Conran collection would tap into the geometric trend, ultimately bringing it very well into 2016. We also saw duffle jackets, cigarette leg trousers, double breasted boxy jackets, cropped wide leg trousers, trench coats, belted dresses, crew neck tops and suede long car coats. The navy-white combinations gave off a slightly marine feel, while the ochre, dark chocolate, moss/forest/deep green and fern were mere earthy. The pinks and oranges left a hint of summer in the Autumn/Winter collection.
