The FASHION UTOPIAS international showcase was launched on Thursday 18th February 2016, at London’s Somerset House. All along London Fashion Week, the West Wing Galleries are open to the public to present 80 emerging designers from 24 different countries. All of these designers expose collections that interpret their own notion of utopia: while Portugal reflected on sustainability fashion as a way to improve today’s society, Nigerian designers collaborated to achieve their common idea of dream and future. Designers incorporated traditional elements from their respective country, and manipulated it to achieve an ideal: Egypt’s tree of life, Indonesia’s four elements or Philippine’s inspiration from the past all show how utopia can take roots in the past to build a better future.
Many more utopian perceptions only expose our world’s diversity. But it also depicts how, although different, all these designers hope for – and believe in – a better future. What happens when several cultures all work together to attain their dream? How can all the designs be so different, and yet all have a similar concept behind them?
With Thomas Moore’s Utopia as the inspiration’s basis, this fashion showcase is heavily supported by art, running aside a more general Utopia event at Somerset House, where artists and thinkers reflected on this notion. Also, each country curated their room in a way that would complement the garments exposed – and immerse every visitor in their very own idea of Utopia.
