With such a name for his Autumn/Winter 2016 collection, KILIAN KERNER knows how to tease his guests for this Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. And the title is not the only thing that will be remembered, as the whole show clearly encrusted itself in memories.
First of all, the setting. In the Ellington Hotel, a big crowd gathers itself around the doors. As more and more people arrive, the room is finally revealed and amazes people. The U-shaped catwalk is in fact decorated with stylish paper trees, and throws us into the designer’s imagination. And what thoughts he has! The collection is based on a fictional family, the Huntingtans, who probably live in the countryside – or the Hamptons – and have a bird for coat of arms. As the audience observes the world that had been created for this night, they can only expect highly from this show. Tonight, we will dream.

When everyone is seated – or standing in the appropriate space –, the lights expose a band that has just arrived. The musicians start playing a song, which lyrics repeat “Black feathers”. This bird theme rules both the fantasy world and the actual garments.
The first looks introduce earthy colours, such as different shades of brown and cream, which refer back to the forest props. A natural aspect to underline the fact that naturally constructed outfits can look great. Kilian reflected this idea with clear and clean cuts, for a perfectly finished work wear. Touches of pink, blue, yellow and orange spice up the looks, as a colourful bird could do in a forest. This lovely reference occurs all the way through the fall collection and hence gives it a nice storyline. This bird appears through different signs – a colour, a logo, a shape or a pattern – and flies itself on dresses, blouses, skirts and outerwear.
Kilian Kerner’s Huntingtans are constituted of professional and classy men and women. In fall and winter, they wear thick wool – because what is better than what has been keeping us warm for centuries – and assume the classics with great elegance. This probably explains the Anna Wintour-reference in the hairstyle and black sunglasses, as she, more than anyone, masters timeless garments. This is actually what Kilian Kerner seeks in his creations, as he describes his customers to be fashionable, without necessarily being trendsetters.

Since 2004, Kilian Kerner has not stopped to establish his brand as one of the must-sees. The designer likes to focus on high-quality fabrics and techniques, rather than creating the next look-of-the-moment. And he is right – by definitions, the classics stay in time, when trendy garments go out of season. This collection sets itself in time and offers assurance to its customers: the future will be fantastic.
