The Museum of Transology is a groundbreaking exhibition that questions the prespective of what it means to be trans. Exploring the challenges faced and overcome by the transgender community in order to become who they truely are.
The exhibition allows its audience an intimate look into the life of the trans community - with each curated piece comes a hand written tag, telling the viewer first hand the story of the person behind the object. From empty hormone boxes and packers to a first lipstick and preserved breast tissue. Each piece is a key moment in an individual’s transition.
Aiming to demystify and clarify the issues surrounding what it means to be transgendered in an age which is ever more accepting, the exhibition gives the transgendered community a platform to express and celebrate their lives and their struggles.
It gives a rounded view of the full transitioning process, with films following the lives of trans boys as young as ten to trans women who only discovered the term at 40; as well as trans publications including zines and a special exhibition book of poetry and short stories created by those who contributed to the exhibition.
The honesty of the exhibition is what makes it such a celebration of life beyond the CIS norm.
There is a focus on self-acceptance which, in turn, breaks down the barriers of acceptance within society through the display of such intimate object - be that a letter from the Queen or a railway card to visit a partner. Each item focuses on the individual moments in the journey of a trans life - it is a celebration of pride of being.
The Museum of Transology is on display at the Fashion Space Gallery within London College of Fashion from 20 January - 22 April 2017.
The project is curated by E-J Scott and features work by a number of LGBTQ+ and trans artists.
